UPP Arts Collection

This collection documents the artistic, administrative, and educational activities of UPP Arts.The materials in this collection reflect a decade of interdisciplinary collaborations between artists, educators, students, and community members who used place-based art to celebrate and build awareness for Providence’s urban ponds. Their work focused particularly on Mashapaug Pond and its environs, which include the site of the Gorham Manufacturing Company and the former West Elmwood neighborhood.

Alvarez High School "Toxic Legacy" film project

Toxic Legacy video created by Alvarez High School students in 2013. Students discuss the history of Mashapaug Pond in Providence and the impact of pollution from the Gorham Manufacturing Company and storm water runoff. Addresses possible solutions to remediate the pond.

The video includes a tour of Mashapaug Pond and surrounding neighborhoods with Amelia Rose of Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island and Diane Rose, a resident and neighborhood activist. The video addresses issues related to toxic pollution and water contamination related to Gorham Manufacturing, water runoff and urban development.

"Remembering West Elmwood Before & After Displacement" chapbook

A booklet including research and excerpts from an oral history project about the West Elmwood neighborhood in Providence before it was demolished as part of an urban redevelopment plan in 1962. The oral history interviews were collected at a community event in May 2016. Topics include housing, race, employment, displacement as a result of urban redevelopment and the industrial park.
