Le four des Alliés ou le Corse près à etre cuit

This caricature is a close copy of George Cruikshank's satire, "The Allied Bakers or, the Corsican Toad in the Hole," published 1 April, 1814. The stiffness and precision of the engraved lines, especially evident in the profiles and clothing of the figures, belie the fact that this sheet is a copy. For more information, see the Cruikshank original also in this collection. On the left side of the image, the Generals Bernadotte, Waranzoff, and Blücher (l. to r.) hold the handle of a long baker's paddle, on the end of which is a dish containing the tiny writhing figure of Napoleon. Standing at the right of the oven, Francis I of Austria struggles, or feigns to struggle, to open the oven's door. On the far right, Wellington, who carries another dish, Bourgogne, strides into the scene towards the oven. A squat Dutchman crouches at the base of the oven. He holds a bellows in his hands and is in charge of stoking the flames with cannon balls and the appurtenances of French military power, like eagle standards and muskets, and with minding the ash that falls through the grate. This sheet has been cropped close to the borders of the image.
