Fully decorated and wearing his military uniform, Napoleon stands on a cliff over looking the ocean. Although in exile, he is represented in a semi-heroic manner: hands behind his back, he stands proud and ready to be recalled to France. In addition, the bank of clouds, choppy sea and the wind that blows his coat back all give the image a wistful and romantic feel.
