Ink note on verso reads: 'Jap howitzer position in beach fortifications on Kolumbangara Island in the New Georgia group. Colonel had a team of a photographer, a draftsman (for floor plane) and myself do a study of fortifications on the island. U.S. never attacked it, so fortifications were in mint condition. It was across Kula Gulf' from New Georgia." Published in Yank, May 7, 1944 as: 'Note how the Japs protected this 75-mm field piece from our bombing attacks.' Crown served in the South Pacific as an infantry artist and Staff Sergeant. He was also a field correspondent for Yank magazine. Gift of the artist, 1994.
