French or American Zouave, c. 1865
Soldier standing holding a musket and bayonet, entrenchment and flag in left background, sea in right distance Soldier standing holding a musket and bayonet, entrenchment and flag in left background, sea in right distance This watercolor was originally identified as a zouave of the Union Army in the American Civil War (see cover of 'Civil War Times Illustrated', May 1979). However, it could also possibly represent a French zouave. The flag in the left background appears to be the French tricolor. In addition, fascines and gabions were rarely used as fortifications in the Civil War. Cincinnati, Cowan's, 2017.
