Army of the Rhine. 2nd Division, Right Wing. 8th Battalion of train of artillery, elite company. We, the undersigned, certify that Citizen Jean-Louis Gilbert, soldier in the said company was wounded in our presence on the head above the left eye by 3 sabre blows, in the engagement of 22 December 9th [1798] between Strasburg and Walz, while driving a canon which was taken by the enemy at the time of the charge, in faith of which we have given him the document to serve or be of value as needed.
