Arnest joined the Army Signal Corps in 1941, becoming a war artist on Iceland in 1943 and later, Chief Artist, Historical Section, in the European Theater of Operations from 1944 until his discharge in 1945. He covered the Battle of the Bulge and was on one of the first patrols to meet Russian troops.
