At head of poem: Written under the influence of the excitement prevalent in Baltimore, when the news was received that the confederates had crossed the Potomac at Port Tobacco, and cut Gen. Sickle's brigade to pieces. At end of text: N.G.R. Baltimore, Oct 27th, 1861.
