It commemorates the Royalist defenders of Chester. The artist obtained accurate details of dress and equipment from contemporary illustrations. From left to right along the top are Sir Richard Grosvenor, Sir William Mainwaring and William Barnston, identified by their coats of arms. In the center, Sir Francis Gamul, another of Charles's attendants at the Siege of Chester, stands in front of his tent, reviewing an array of military equipment. N.Y., Rockman Prints, 1973.
