Ils viennent se bruler à la Chandelle

Hand-colored etching (by Elie); Napoleon stands atop Mont St Jean, holding a torch in one hand and a piece of paper in the other. Skulls and bones litter the ground beneath him. Bat-winged heads of well-known people surround him. Broadley: "Napoleon is represented as standing on a mound marked 'Waterloo,' amidst a lot of human bones; below are the broken bridge of Leipzig, the Sphinx of Egypt, the minarets of Moscow on fire, and broken columns representing Spain. In his right hand he holds up a torch, and in his left a paper lettered 'Speech to the two chambers.' Around him are flying a number of human-headed bats, Garat, Manuel, Savary, Merlin, Labédoyère, Régnault, Queen Hortense, Lafayette, etc. Beneath run the words 'They come and burn themselves in the candle.'"
