Note on verso: 'I bought this drawing at Christies at Sir Edmund Davis's sale, lot 48, upon July 7th, 1939. There were three labels upon the back of the frame - the first: The Royal Academy winter exhibition, 1898 ... The second: written upon note paper with the address 'Collingwood Mount, Camberley, Surrey, stamped on it in gothic letter is in different hand writing - It runs as follows: "This picture is an original by Sir J.E. Millais, done by him at Ewell in 1847 - it was exhibited after his death at the winter exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1898, No. 198 in catalogue" - This statement is signed Arthur Reid Lampiere - The third is a cutting from the catalogue of 1898 which simply says - "198. Attack on a barricade in Paris, pencil, 10 1/2 by 16 1/2 in - Major General A.R. Lempiere". This drawing was bought by Sir Edmund Davis at the Red Cross Sale 1916 - and bought by me at this sale at Christies (lot 48) July 7th, 1939 - J.E. Lownisky 1939. N.Y., Rockman Prints, 1965.
