Nouvelle farce qui a été representé a Paris avec éclat, acteur principal le Roi de Rome???
This image is a French copy of Cruikshank's caricature, "Delusion, a New Farce." It is a different impression of the print cataloged as work number 130605. On the event of his third birthday, the young King of Rome was brought to review the troops. In this image the King of Rome is wheeled on his hobby horse by his father, Napoleon Bonaparte, who gestures towards the two lines of soldiers standing at attention in front of them. The rear row of soldiers is war ravaged--emaciated skeletons who are missing eyes and noses. Their lips are locked shut by medals of the "Legion d'Honneur." The soldiers in the front row are all children who have sprouted grotesque features, mustaches and beards. The combination of scarred veterans and young children comments upon Napoleon's policy of conscription, which consumed the population of France. Despite Napoleon's best efforts to interest his son in his birthright, the King of Rome complains that he would like to be returned to his mother, and his chamber pot. The King of Rome is followed by a nurse who carries the end of his elaborate pig tail, and by a Mameluke who carries a pot of porridge and a basket of diapers. Behind them, portraits in a print shop window proclaim "Vive l'Empereur." This image is a French copy of Cruikshank's caricature, "Delusion, a New Farce."
