In August 1873, the First and Second Divisions consisting of 12,000 soldiers and 2,100 horses gathered on Dartmoor for two weeks of maneuvers with the main camp being on Ringmoor Down. The exercises were carried out over a wide area of the moor but had to be called off due to bad weather. N.Y., Rockman Prints, 1949.
