Distinguished Militia Genl. during an action
Lithograph (by Currier & Ives); Union general, mounted, consulting manual while leading zouaves against close fire from fortifications at left. The officer seemingly oblivious to the dead soldiers lying around says, “Well I declare that last order don't seemed to have succeeded any better than the preceding one; really I must consult the Tactics. - Oh! ah! - I see, – the next is to retreat.” Another Union solder on the left is telling a confederate soldier, "Don't kill that fellow on the horse, we shall never loose while he commands." Presented, 1945, by Clarence Brigham, American Antiquarian Society.
