Hop, step and jump

Napoleon hops on a series of 'steps' set in a body of water. He leaps from his humble beginnings in Corsica, to France, and finally to Dover where he lands on the tip of John Bull's sword. Napoleon hops on a series of 'steps' set in a body of water. He leaps from his humble beginnings in Corsica, to France, and finally to Dover where he lands on the tip of John Bull's sword. Published by Thomas Tegg, 1801-01-07. British Museum, BM 1044. The sheet in the Hay was re-issued by Thomas Tegg on January 1, 1807, six years after it was originally published by Roberts. Tegg's plate number is 26. George notes: 'The pl. is attributed by Broadley to 1 Jan., 1801, which is scarcely possible. Tegg's date relates only to the first reissue in 1807; it was again reissued in 1815.' This type of image is based on a popular model that imagines Napoleon's rise to power and his decline in terms of a life cycle, and is one of many that responded to fears of a French invasion in the summer of 1801, and in 1803.
