The trip-hell alliance
In this brightly colored satire, the Devil stands between Napoleon and the Pope, urging Napoleon to join the alliance and kiss the Pope's bared foot. The Devil places one hand on Napoleon's back, and in his other hand he grasps the Pope's leg. Napoleon kneels on a cross and reaches eagerly for the Pope's outstreached foot. The Pope, fallen over backwards in a submissive posture, has abandoned his mitre, staff and rosary beads. In the distance a three-headed dog bears the busts of the Pope, the Devil and Napoleon. This print is in excellent condition, but has been trimmed close to the borders of the image.
