Spanish flies or Boney takeing an imoderate dose

Napoleon stands in the center of the image. He has removed his hat and is attempting to ward off a swarm of flies with the oversized hat hand his saber. A torn scroll at his feet is labeled "Decrees of the Junta at Bayonne" and is unrolled to reveal text referring to Joseph Bonaparte. Several broken swords and a tattered French flag are also at his feet. The masses of bottle-green flies arise from the city of Madrid, which is visible in the right distance of the image. Another swarm attacks the French army as they try to flee through a mountain pass located on the left of the sheet and labeled "Pass of the Pyranees route to Bayonne."
