Little "ships", or John Bull very inquisitive

One of the satires responding to the fear of a French invasion of England, this satire shows John Bull (l.) confronting Napoleon (r.) concerning his intentions for the small model ships he carves. Bull is dressed in a manner that indicates his working class status; he holds a walking stick and wears a simple brown jacket, a broad brimmed black hat, heavy black shoes and is without a wig. Napoleon is seated and is dressed in his trademark blue jacket, gold braid, and black jack boots. Seated at a small table, and busily at work building model ships, Napoleon raises his face to address Bull. Bull stands with his hands on his hip and approaches the table with mistrust. A large basket full of ships is behind Napoleon, at the far right of the image. Dialogue: Bull: "I ax Pardon for Coming in with my hat on without knocking, but hearing a nation thumping in your workshop, thought I I might as well step up stairs and see what the youngster is about." Napoleon: "Don't be alarmed Johnny, I am only making a few little ships for my own Private amusement." Inscription: Pubd. by P. Roberts, 28 [?] Middle Row.
