Spanish patriots entring Madrid, or the Grand Duke of Bergs retreat dicovered

General Murat sits in a wooden outhouse located at the right of the image. He has removed his hat and wig, revealing disheveled hair. Clearly Murat is not in good health: his face is ashen, and he grips the edges of the outhouse seat in discomfort. A sheet of paper inscribed "To Genl. Murat State Papers Bayone" lies at his feet. A group of Spanish soldiers arrives from the left of the image. They are all dressed in plumed hats, ruffs and leggings, and carry bayonets. The leader of the group points the sharp edge of his weapon at the French General and leads the assault. Other Spanish soldiers stand in the background and gesture towards Murat in his "retreat."
