Ryland, John Collett to Manning, James: 1773 May

No salutation, but may be complete letter. Dated from "next May come Twelvemonth--1774." Will not see Dr. Stennett to inquire about Dr. Chauncey until he goes to London in June; asks detail of instances of ill will to the College; both he and Isaac Woodman desire a full account of the College to assist in soliciting subscriptions; the award of about 20 honours to men he named would help; has sent some books to Morgan Edwards to present to the College; stresses that honours must be unsought, so would not ask persons if they would accept; quotes Dr. Gill on receiving diploma from Scotland; describes life and accomplishments of Rev. Augustus Toplady of Established Church of England and his regard for Baptist ministers Dr. Rutherford and Dr. Gill; Isaac Woodman keeps his honours a secret; Ryland sends five guineas a year, two of these exclusively for JM; dislikes idea of lottery; has sent Ferguson's which is suitable for school boys.
