Journal of the Andrew Hicks (Bark) and California (Ship), mastered by Edward Everett Hicks and George F. Brightman, and kept by Samuel G. Mingo, on whaling voyages between 1879 and 1885
A journal of two voyages kept by Samuel (Sammy) G. Mingo, a member of the Narragansett tribe and a resident of Martha's Vineyard. Mingo served as senior mate on board the Andrew Hicks. As fourth mate aboard the California Mingo was presented with a gold watch for "having raised whales the most times that we have taken them." The journal includes drawings of whales, including a drawing of a whaleboat in pursuit of a whale; accounts; a copy of the essay "Raising, Pursuit and Capture of a Sperm Whale"; and the words to approximately 25 songs. According to E. Gale Huntington, author of Songs the Whalemen Sang, the journal was discovered in a garbage dump in Martha's Vineyard.
