Prints, Drawings and Watercolors from the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection
This vast digital collection of military artwork from the 16th through 20th centuries, vividly documents all aspects of military and naval history, with emphasis on the history and illustration of world military and naval uniforms from the 17th century to the present. In addition to the material on military and naval dress, the collection contains thousands of battle and campaign scenes, portraits, caricatures, wartime posters, original photographs, material pertaining to military decorations and insignia, heraldic ornaments, armor, weaponry, equitation, flags, knightly orders, court and ceremonial dress, architecture, and the general history of costume.

Formerly occupied by Sir Henry Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, at the outbreak of the mutiny, the Residency became the last defended place for the British. The building was crammed with soldiers and civilians. "There is not one hole or corner where one can enjoy an instant's privacy," wrote one lady in her journal. The posed figure on the far right stands in front of the room where Lawrence was killed. Fox, in uniform, stands at attention in profile to the left, holding four muskets (or a musket with four triggers and barrels). An armlet is inscribed 'Sinew of Rebellion'. He wears a bonnet-rouge with tricolour cockade; in his belt, and very prominent on his protruding stomach, are two pistols and a dagger. At his back hang materials for arson: a knapsack inscribed 'Fire is the best Weapon you can Use - ' It is filled with sticks of combustibles. Two grenades project from a bulging breeches pocket. From his protruding lips issues a blast inscribed: 'Inflammatory Harrangues / To stir up the People to / Acts of Sedition / Mutiny Treason / Rebellion.' At his feet are two papers: 'Punctual discharge of my Duty to my Constituants [scored through and replaced by] Colleagues'; 'Remonstrance from my Constituents for non Attendance'. On the left is a broad low post on which is a placard: 'Head Quarters Craven House [scored through and replaced by] Crown & Anchor Parole Reform - Countersign - Anarchy.' -- British Museum Hand-colored etched caricature.
