Allan served in the Madras Infantry from 1780 and took part in the third and fourth Mysore war, the latter as Deputy Quartermaster General. As he spoke Persian fluently, he was appointed to carry the flag of truce into the Palace of Seringapatam after its fall and negotiate with Tipu Sultan. Subsequently, Allan was with General Baird when Tipu's body was found. He resigned from the Army in 1804 and from 1814 was a Director of the East India Company. London, Parker Gallery, 1950.
