Mack à bout: dédiée à la Grande Armée

Hand-colored etched caricature published December 1805; 'A French soldier, wearing a cocked hat, long gaiters, and a knapsack, is about to throw down a decadent-looking officer (r.) inscribed 'russe'. The latter staggers back, terrified, losing his cocked hat which is decorated with a star. On the left., with his back to this couple, the disgraced 'Mack' stands in profile to the left., weeping, with flexed knees, hands clasped as if in prayer. He wears a (?) nightcap and military dress from which all badges of rank have been stripped; his scabbard is empty. From his pocket projects his 'Plan de campagne'. Behind him is the strongly fortified town of 'Ulm' flying a tricolour flag; from it marches a long serpentine body of Austrian troops, guarded here and there by a single French soldier. Pen inscription: '23000 hom pris à Ulm'. In the distance (l.) tiny mounted soldiers gallop from left. to r. On the horizon (r.) are the spires and buildings of 'Vienne'; a flag inscribed 'N' flies from a tower. In the middle distance, with his back to Vienna and standing on a road leading to that city, stands a stout John Bull, in top-boots, clasping money-bags, whose contents pour to the ground. He registers distress and alarm, and is 'l'Anglais perdant son or'. -- British Museum.
