Prints, Drawings and Watercolors from the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection
This vast digital collection of military artwork from the 16th through 20th centuries, vividly documents all aspects of military and naval history, with emphasis on the history and illustration of world military and naval uniforms from the 17th century to the present. In addition to the material on military and naval dress, the collection contains thousands of battle and campaign scenes, portraits, caricatures, wartime posters, original photographs, material pertaining to military decorations and insignia, heraldic ornaments, armor, weaponry, equitation, flags, knightly orders, court and ceremonial dress, architecture, and the general history of costume.

Ses talens et son gànie extraordinaire pour les fortificatations le firent connairtre avec éclat aux deux sièges de Ste Menehoud, et à Stenai, de Landrecies, de Valenciennes, de Mont-Médi, de Gravelines, d'Ypres et d'Oudenarde, en 1667 il eut la condiate des sièges que le Roi fit en personne et fut blessé devant Douai. Le Roi le Nomma gouverneur de la Citadelle de l'Ille qu'il venait de constuire. Au siège de Cambrai on attaqua inconsidérement et malgre ses avis, la demie-lune de la citadelle; elle fut emportée, mais les ennemis la repriren aussitõt et l'on perdit 400 hommes et 40 Officiers, deux jours après Vauban l'attaqua dans les formes, s'en rendit ,mâitre et ne perdit que trois hommes. Après la paix de Nimègue il fit le fameux port de Dunkerque, son chef-d'oeuvre et celui de l'art Strasbourg et Casal furent ensuite ses travaux les plus considèrables. En 1684 il prit Luxembourg, regardé comme imprenable; Mos, Namur et Charleroi tombèrent également en son pouvoir. Tant d'exploits lui firent donner en 1703 le titre de Maréchal de France. Il termina sa brillante carriére par le siège de Vieux-Brissac, place très considèrable qui ne coûta que 300 hommes. Le siège de Turin avait été confie au Duc de la Feuillade, jeune homme sans expérience et comme il n'avancait pas Louis XIV consulta Vauban qui lui offrit d'aller condiure les travaux...Mais, Monsieur le Maréchal, lui dit le Roi, songez qui cet emploi est au-dessous de votre dignité. Sire, repondit Vauban, ma dignité est de servir l'Etat. Je laisserai mon bâton de Maréchal à la porte et j'aiderai peut-être le Duc à prendre la vill. La crainte de dégouter le général fit refuser ce vertueux citoyen. Vauban mourut en 1707 d'une fluxion de poitrine. il avait 74 ans.
