Qui paye ses dettes s'enrichit

Lithographed caricature (attribtued to Grandville), printed by Delaunois. The subject of the plate is the payment of the indemnity of twenty-five millions in the United States. The American president, his hands resting on a sword, is in front of the bow of a boat named "THE AMERICAN". The anchor lies at his feet. In front of him, a table, on which are placed piles of silver coins and a scale. On the other side, Louis-Philippe in a frock coat and hat, puts some of the money in his pocket. At his feet, a bribe underlines the meaning of the action. At the rear, weakened France is surrounded by a group of men including the ministers Persil and Thiers. From his hands fall coins into a bag. From 'La Caricature (Journal), No. 237, plate 493 Lithographed caricature (attribtued to Grandville), printed by Delaunois.
