Harris Broadsides

Broadsides are single-sheet publications, often issued as ephemera or announcements. The Harris Broadsides Collection is a comprehensive collection of American poetry published in broadside format from colonial times to the present. The collection offers materials covering a broad spectrum of American life, and includes poetry of every description: 18th and 19th century ballads, verse describing newsworthy events, poetic effusions of sentimentality and patriotism, comic verse, and much more. When completed, this digital project will include over 20,000 titles.

A satire in verse about a pro-temperance printer in Taunton, Mass., and his associates. Caption title. In two columns separated by vertical rule; double rule at top, also under caption title. At end of text: woodcut (sentry with drawn curved sword, and gateway, with words: Constitution, justice, wisdom, moderation) First line: Good neighbors, all attend to me.

Cady, author of three books of "Rhymes of Vermont Rural Life," decides to erect a granite mausoleum on Hardback Hill, West Windsor, where to inurn his ashes. Poem in two eight-line stanzas. At end of text: Windsor House, Sept. 26, 1928. Of this broadside there are 30 copies of which this is Number [blank] Author's name from ms. signature, followed by printed word "Author," on Brown University copy. Place of publication and publisher from dealer when Brown University copy was acquired; Coates was editor and printer at Driftwind Press.
